Each player writes down a Townsfolk, an Outsider, a Minion, and a Demon, then hands them back to the Storyteller. The Storyteller will then choose a Demon at random, then choose Minions at random, then choose Outsiders/Townsfolk at random. The Storyteller may have to make some character type swaps in order to create a bag that follows all set-up abilities. The Storyteller will then circle what you are on your paper and hand it back to you.
If two people are the same character, they are both drunk until all but one of them is dead or out-of-play. This also means that their set-up text will not be followed.
A Spirit of Ivory is in play because shenanigans.
The following characters are not allowed:
- Drunk, Lunatic, Marionette - you don't know if you are those roles
- Engineer, Pit-Hag - they just go against the spirit of the game
- Psychopath - very wildly unbalances things
- Legion - requires multiple people to be the same role
The following characters are adjusted for play:
- Choirboy, Huntsman - If no one has chosen their paired role, then Storyteller decides one person to become the appropriate role.
- Kazali - Kazalis will choose which players become Minions, but those players will become the Minions they chose on their paper.
- Atheist, Summoner - These take up the "Demon" slot in your initial picks.
- Organ Grinder - You may specify if you would like old Organ Grinder (can't die unless they vote for themselves) or new Organ Grinder (can poison themselves)
- Lil' Monsta - You may put Lil' Monsta as your Demon - if you do and you are chosen to be the Demon, you will be your Minion and Lil' Monsta will be in play.
- Village Idiot - If there are three or less Village Idiots, then they do not trigger the Whalebucket Draft drunkenness. If there are four or more Village Idiots, then all of them are Whalebucket Draft Drunk. The drunk Village Idiot will be determined where there are three or less VIs alive.
- Mathematician - Abilities failing due to Whalebucket drunkenness will trigger the Mathematician. The Mathematician will not see setup abilities that failed.
